Synopsis
Tiger and Del have settled into semi-retirement to raise their daughter, running a school for those who wish to become sword-dancers, the specially trained fighters hired to settle feuds among the rich and powerful desert princes in a highly ritualised rite. Tiger, who long ago broke his oaths to save Del's life and made himself the target of men formerly his colleagues, is drawn out once more when the world around them begins falling victim to a malignant Northern-born magic. He gathers Del and his adult son Neesha to end the magic threatening the world, and discovers on the journey yet another element of magecraft within himself. The eighth novel of the saga; its ending leaves the quest unresolved, and a ninth book has been mentioned by the author.

Notes
- From the series record (Tiger and Del): Jennifer Roberson's Sword-Dancer saga (1986-), told in the sardonic voice of Tiger, the Sandtiger, a Southron sword-dancer, and following his partnership with Del, a Northern sword-singer: duels in the ritual circle, souls bound into blades, and the long question of Tiger's origins. Six novels published 1986-2002 as a complete arc, then two more (2013, 2022) with a ninth mentioned.
