Synopsis

This is the first short-story anthology set in Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar, a shared-world collection she edited inviting other fantasy writers to contribute tales alongside her own. Its eighteen stories range across the kingdom's history and geography, following established figures such as Herald-Mage Vanyel, Herald Savil, and Solaris of Karse as well as entirely new characters, Heralds, Bards, Healers, and ordinary people whose lives intersect with the Heralds and their Companions. Several entries launch recurring miniseries that would continue in later anthologies, including Tanya Huff's Herald Jors stories and Richard Lee Byers' Selden Investigation tales. Rather than one continuous plot, the book offers a mosaic of adventures, mysteries, and character studies that expand the texture of Valdemar's society, borders, and neighboring lands, giving both longtime readers and newcomers a wider view of the world beyond Lackey's own novels.
