Synopsis
The first of the Histories of King Kelson novels (Ballantine hardcover, 1984) is set in the kingdom of Gwynedd in late 1123 and early 1124. King Kelson Haldane faces a growing rebellion led by the Mearan Pretender, Princess Caitrin Quinnell, and by the former archbishop Edmund Loris, who has escaped imprisonment. After Dhugal MacArdry is captured and Kelson raids the Mearan city of Ratharkin, the king agrees to marry Caitrin's daughter Sidana to help avert open rebellion. The wedding ends in tragedy when Sidana's brother Llewell kills her, leaving Kelson grieving and the old political conflict poised to erupt into war.
