Overview
Katherine Kurtz's Chronicles of the Deryni establishes her long-running Deryni setting: a secondary-world fantasy kingdom, Gwynedd, where a magically gifted human subrace, the Deryni, are feared and persecuted by the human majority they live among. This dossier covers only the original trilogy that introduced the setting, Deryni Rising (1970), Deryni Checkmate (1972), and High Deryni (1973), which follows young King Kelson Haldane as he comes into both his throne and his own partial Deryni heritage amid court intrigue and open conflict between Deryni-fearing nobles and the kingdom's hidden Deryni population. Kurtz drew on real medieval history and ecclesiastical structure for Gwynedd's setting, giving the series an unusually grounded, almost historical texture for fantasy of its period. The trilogy launched a much larger body of Deryni fiction that Kurtz continued writing across further trilogies for decades, including the separately catalogued Legends of Camber of Culdi and Childe Morgan sequences.
