Overview

David and Leigh Eddings' Belgariad Universe comprises The Belgariad (1982-1984) and its direct sequel The Malloreon (1987-1991), plus two prequels narrated by the world's oldest sorcerers, tracing a world-spanning prophecy pitting two rival gods and their chosen champions against each other across millennia. The Belgariad follows Garion, an apparently ordinary farm boy who learns he is the prophesied Rivan King destined to reclaim a stolen, world-altering Orb of power, guided by the sorcerer Belgarath and his daughter Polgara; The Malloreon sends an older Garion east into a previously unseen half of the world to prevent a second, opposing prophecy from completing itself. Belgarath the Sorcerer (1995) and Polgara the Sorceress (1997), narrated respectively by the series' two oldest recurring characters, fill in millennia of backstory. Leigh Eddings is credited as co-author starting only with the first of these prequels; the original-credit rule governs how this database records that history, since later revelations confirmed she had co-written the earlier books uncredited from the start.
