Synopsis

The Crystal Gryphon opens in the war-torn Dales of High Hallack, where Kerovan, heir to Ulmsdale, and Joisan of Ithkrypt are bound together as children through a formal axe marriage, though they do not meet in person. Kerovan, marked from birth by unsettling physical differences that fuel rumors about his true parentage, grows up isolated and uncertain of his place among his own people. When invaders sweep into the Dales during what chroniclers call the Year of the Fire Troll, the distant betrothal becomes urgent and real, drawing Joisan out from her own besieged keep in search of the husband she has never met. Their separate journeys through a land overrun by war and old, half-forgotten powers set up the reunion, and the dangers, that follow in the rest of the Gryphon trilogy.

Where it sits

  • Universe: Witch World
  • Series: Witch World: High Hallack Cycle expanded; position 2 of 11 in the series' recorded order
  • Author: Andre Norton

Notes

  • From the series record (Witch World: High Hallack Cycle): A separate High Hallack sub-continuity within the wider Witch World setting, solely written by Andre Norton (Core Canon, the Estcarp Cycle, is unaffected). 2 later titles co-written by other hands (Songsmith 1992 w/ A.C. Crispin, Silver May Tarnish 2005 w/ Lyn McConchie) are deliberately excluded per this project's credited-authorship bright line (Darkover/Pern precedent); The Gates to Witch World (1994) is an omnibus of already-counted novels, not new content.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
