Synopsis

Year of the Unicorn follows Gillan, a young woman raised among the nuns of Norstead Abbey in Estcarp after being taken in as a foundling years earlier. When the mysterious Were-Riders of the Waste agree to fight alongside the Dales against the invading forces of Alizon, their price is a company of brides chosen from among willing women, thirteen in all, sent out to meet husbands they have never seen. Gillan puts herself forward in place of another woman and travels with the bridal party to the edge of the Waste to meet her unknown match. What follows draws her into the strange, half-human society of the shape-changing Were-Riders and forces her to confront both her own uncertain origins and the shifting nature of the man she has bound herself to.

Where it sits

  • Universe: Witch World
  • Series: Witch World: High Hallack Cycle expanded; position 1 of 11 in the series' recorded order
  • Author: Andre Norton

Notes

  • From the series record (Witch World: High Hallack Cycle): A separate High Hallack sub-continuity within the wider Witch World setting, solely written by Andre Norton (Core Canon, the Estcarp Cycle, is unaffected). 2 later titles co-written by other hands (Songsmith 1992 w/ A.C. Crispin, Silver May Tarnish 2005 w/ Lyn McConchie) are deliberately excluded per this project's credited-authorship bright line (Darkover/Pern precedent); The Gates to Witch World (1994) is an omnibus of already-counted novels, not new content.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Witch World: High Hallack Cycle: position 1 of 11: next The Crystal Gryphon (1972)
