Synopsis
The First Bright Thing opens in 1926 as the Spark Circus arrives in Des Moines, Iowa, bringing performances built on magic that seems to defy explanation, from shapeshifters to flying performers. At the center of the circus is Rin, its Ringmaster, who has built a new life with her wife Odette and their troupe of supernatural performers, having fled a dangerous past she has kept carefully hidden. That fragile peace is threatened when a mysterious girl appears wearing an old smock that once belonged to Rin, suggesting that the man she fled long ago, known only as the Circus King, has finally tracked her down. The novel follows Rin as she tries to protect the found family and refuge of wonder she has built against the reappearance of the danger she thought she had left behind.
