J. R. Dawson is a contemporary American author of science fiction and fantasy who uses she/they pronouns and is based on Dakota land in Minnesota, where she lives with her spouse and three dogs. Dawson teaches creative writing within the MFA program at Drexel University, bringing an academic dimension to a career built primarily on genre-crossing speculative fiction. Her debut novel, The First Bright Thing, is set within a magical traveling circus during the years following the First World War and blends historical fiction with fantastical elements exploring trauma, queerness, and found family; the novel won the Golden Crown Literary Award, a significant honor recognizing excellence in lesbian and sapphic fiction. Her subsequent novel, The Lighthouse at the Edge of the World, reimagines the classical myth of Orpheus and Eurydice through a sapphic lens, continuing Dawson's interest in reworking mythic and historical material through a queer, emotionally driven perspective. Beyond her novels, Dawson has published a substantial body of short fiction in prominent genre venues, including The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Lightspeed, Podcastle, and Uncanny Magazine, establishing her as an active and respected voice in the short fiction community as well as long-form storytelling. Dawson's fiction is generally noted for combining historical settings and mythic structure with contemporary sensibilities around gender, sexuality, and mental health, and for its warmth and emotional intimacy even amid difficult subject matter.
