Synopsis

The Ghost Bride, published in 2013, is set in nineteenth-century colonial Malaya and follows Li Lan, a young woman whose family has fallen on hard times after losing its fortune. Her father is approached by the wealthy Lim family with an unusual proposal: that Li Lan become a ghost bride, marrying the family's recently deceased son in a traditional arrangement meant to appease his restless spirit. As Li Lan wavers over the proposal, her nights become plagued by disturbing dreams of her would-be husband, and she finds her own soul separating from her body, drawing her into the shadowy realm of the Chinese afterlife, with its own bureaucracies, spirits, and dangers. Caught between the living world and the dead, Li Lan must navigate this unfamiliar realm while trying to understand what the Lim family truly wants from her and how to reclaim her own fate.
