Yangsze Choo was born in the Philippines to a Malaysian family of Chinese descent; her father's diplomatic career meant the family relocated frequently during her childhood, including periods in Thailand, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. She attended Harvard University and initially worked as a management consultant before leaving that career to focus on family and writing, often composing her fiction at night. Her debut novel, The Ghost Bride (2013), took three years to write and draws on the Chinese tradition of ghost marriage and broader Chinese mythology; it became a New York Times bestseller, was recognized as a Best Book by Oprah.com, and was later adapted by Netflix into a television series co-directed by Malaysian filmmakers Quek Shio-chuan and Ho Yu-hang. Her second novel, The Night Tiger (2019), required four years to complete and is set in 1931 Malaya, exploring the Malaysian weretiger myth; it was selected for the Big Jubilee Read celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee. Her third novel, The Fox Wife (2024), is set in early 1900s Manchuria and follows a fox spirit seeking justice, earning a longlist spot for the International Dublin Literary Award and finalist status for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. Choo resides in California with her husband, children, and chickens.
