Overview
In winter 1908 Manchuria, a fox spirit sets out across Manchuria, Dalian, and Japan to find and take revenge on whoever killed her kit, her investigation crossing paths with an aging detective hired to look into a string of deaths attributed to fox-spirit folklore. A standalone historical fantasy steeped in Chinese and Manchu fox-spirit legend, confirmed a wholly separate setting, era, and cast from Yangsze Choo's other historical fantasies, The Ghost Bride (2013) and The Night Tiger (2019), both set in colonial-era Malaya.
