Overview
A supernatural historical fantasy set in colonial-era Malaysia, drawing on Chinese folklore about spirit marriage, following a young woman offered as a ghost bride to a dead man and drawn into the world of the afterlife to solve his family's secrets. Yangsze Choo's 2013 debut novel is set in 1890s British Malaya and moves between the everyday world of Malacca's Chinese merchant families and a richly imagined afterlife bureaucracy, complete with its own courts, currency, and hierarchy of the dead. The novel drew on Choo's own Malaysian-Chinese family history and on real historical accounts of spirit marriage practices, and it became a New York Times bestseller shortly after publication. It was later adapted into a Malaysian streaming television series, extending the novel's reach well beyond its original English-language readership and introducing the story to viewers largely unfamiliar with the source material.
