Synopsis
Connie's relatives want to keep her away from the Society for the Protection of Mythical Creatures, and they send her to stay with her great-aunt in Chartmouth, cut off from the creatures she can talk to. Meanwhile the Society is trying to save Mallins Wood, which is threatened by developers and is home to the last gorgon, a creature that can kill with a single look. Col's difficult mother is the gorgon's Companion, bonded to her, and she is determined to protect her even if it puts her son at risk. When Col is captured by Kullervo, Connie must find a way to rescue him without her great-aunt finding out she has slipped away.
