Synopsis
The second novel of the House of Kendreth sequence moves away from the child protagonists of Red Moon and Black Mountain to follow Mor'anh and his sister Nai, priest and priestess of the nomadic Alnei tribe that roams the plains beyond the walled city of Malde. When a noble of the city-dwelling Kalnat forcibly takes Nai as a slave in open violation of his own people's laws, the injustice deepens Mor'anh's already growing disillusionment with the long-standing tribute arrangement binding the Alnei to Malde's rule. After his father is murdered, Mor'anh inherits leadership of his tribe and makes the fateful decision to end the Alnei's tribute payments altogether, a choice that sets the nomads on a collision course with the city that has ruled over them for generations.
