Synopsis

In this second novel following Thara Celehar, the Witness for the Dead continues his work in the city of Amalo, still adjusting to a quieter, more settled life than the one that drew him into his previous case. He takes on an investigation connected to a series of deaths at the city's opera house, where the dead appear to be involved in circumstances that go beyond simple accident, drawing Celehar into the theater's closed and gossip-ridden community. As he works the case, he also continues to navigate his own grief and the complicated personal relationships that have grown around him in Amalo, including new responsibilities that come with training an apprentice, all while the investigation deepens into questions of who benefits from the deaths and why.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
