Synopsis

In this third novel of the Cemeteries of Amalo series, Thara Celehar has lost the supernatural gift that once let him hear the words of the recently deceased, and is instead adjusting to a changed role, mentoring a protege and overseeing a troubled cemetery on behalf of the Archprelate. His routine is upended when miners abduct him, hoping his abilities as a Witness for the Dead can help them identify an unseen force that has been killing workers in their mine; when he proves unable to help as they expect, they abandon him underground. The kidnapping and its aftermath draw Celehar into a case involving dragon remains and a questionable salvage operation, pulling him back toward the kind of danger and political entanglement in Amalo that has always followed him.
