Synopsis

When out-of-season hurricanes begin devastating Corinne's seaside village, she initially suspects Mama D'Leau, the tyrannical jumbie of the ocean who has caused trouble for Corinne and her friends before. The truth turns out to be far worse: the destruction is being unleashed by Huracan, an enraged god who summons wind and rain and wields lightning like a weapon against the island. To save her home, Corinne must set aside old grudges and unite with friends and former adversaries alike, racing to discover what has provoked Huracan's fury before his storms finish what they have started. Drawing together Caribbean and West African mythology, the story closes out the trilogy by testing Corinne's growing sense of community and courage against its most dangerous threat yet.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Jumbies): A middle-grade trilogy drawing on Caribbean (Trinidadian) folklore -- jumbies, douens, and other island spirit-creatures -- reworked as a Caribbean answer to European fairy tale conventions, per the author's own stated intent.
