Synopsis

Corinne La Mer, a fearless girl in a Caribbean village, does not believe in jumbies, the folkloric tricksters her elders have long warned children to fear, until a pair of glowing yellow eyes follows her home from the forbidden forest one night. What begins as an unsettling encounter soon pulls Corinne into her island's hidden folklore, forcing her to reckon with the possibility that the old warnings her community dismissed as superstition are rooted in something real and dangerous. As stranger occurrences follow her back into everyday village life, Corinne must decide whether to trust the stories she grew up hearing or to face what is stalking her on her own terms, drawing her into a confrontation with the world of jumbies that her elders had hoped to keep at a safe distance.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Jumbies): A middle-grade trilogy drawing on Caribbean (Trinidadian) folklore -- jumbies, douens, and other island spirit-creatures -- reworked as a Caribbean answer to European fairy tale conventions, per the author's own stated intent.
