Synopsis
The rebellion against the Council is about to begin, and the Misfits of Obernewtyn have agreed to take part in exchange for the rebels' promise to accept them once it is won. Elspeth Gordie, sent to the lowlands again, has her own reasons for going: the trail of the Seeker's quest leads toward the Keeping Place, where the Beforetime seer Kasanda left signs for the one who must destroy the weaponmachines. As the rebels strike and the Land convulses, Elspeth must navigate the alliance's fragile politics and the Herders' hatred, while at Obernewtyn the comatose girl Dragon's dreams reveal her lost past as the daughter of the Red Queen, a ruler across the sea. Her strong aura gives everyone at the compound nightmares, and the truth behind her coma becomes bound to Elspeth's own destiny.
