Synopsis

The King of Attolia is the third novel in The Queen's Thief series, following A Conspiracy of Kings in internal chronology though published before it. It opens after Eugenides, the former thief of Eddis, has married the Queen of Attolia, uniting their two long-hostile countries, though he deliberately presents himself at court as an ineffectual figurehead while the Queen continues to rule. The story is told through Costis, a young soldier in the Queen's Guard who strikes the king in a moment of frustration and expects execution for it. Instead Eugenides spares him and draws him into his confidence, and Costis, who initially despises the king, begins to glimpse the deeper capability Eugenides hides. Political enemies at court and threats from abroad put pressure on the new marriage, and the fate of three nations comes to depend on choices Eugenides has yet to make.
