Synopsis

The Leviathan of Babylon, published by Hagar Yanai in 2006, opens its trilogy by blending Jewish, Babylonian, Sumerian, and Akkadian mythology into an alternate history. Siblings Jonathan and Ella Margolis, living ordinary lives in the present day, find themselves pulled into a parallel world known as the Empire of Babylon, a realm ruled by physician-priests whose authority rests on ancient learning and older fears. Chief among those fears is the possible return of the Leviathan, a monstrous force from the region's deepest mythology whose reawakening the ruling priesthood has long worked to prevent by any means necessary. As Jonathan and Ella try to understand a world governed by rules utterly unlike their own, they are drawn into the tensions surrounding the Leviathan's rise, tensions that connect uncomfortably to their own presence in a realm they were never meant to enter.
