Synopsis

The Magicians' Guild is the first novel in Trudi Canavan's Black Magician trilogy, set in the city of Imardin, capital of Kyralia, where the powerful Magicians' Guild maintains order in part through a purge that drives the poorest inhabitants from the city each year. Sonea, a girl from the slums who has grown up distrustful of the Guild after seeing its magicians turn out the destitute, unexpectedly displays a wild and dangerous magical talent when she throws a stone that breaks through the Guild's protective barrier and injures a magician. As her untrained power threatens to become uncontrollable and put her and those around her at risk, the Guild launches an urgent search to find her before harm is done, while Sonea, torn between fear of capture and her desperate need for training, begins to suspect that something is amiss within the very institution pursuing her.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Black Magician Trilogy: position 1 of 3: next The Novice (2002)
  • Internal chronology, within The Black Magician Trilogy and the Kyralia World: position 2 of 7: previous The Magician's Apprentice (2009) · next The Novice (2002)
