Synopsis

Continuing directly from The Magicians' Guild, this second novel in the Black Magician trilogy follows Sonea as she begins her education as a novice within the Magicians' Guild, contending with the hostility and rumors spread by classmates drawn from Kyralia's wealthy families who resent her slum origins. Alongside her studies, Sonea becomes entangled in a growing secret involving the Guild's High Lord, Akkarin, whose private behavior raises troubling questions she cannot easily voice. Meanwhile her friend and mentor Dannyl, newly promoted to Guild Ambassador, is dispatched to the Elyne court, where he is secretly assigned to investigate a body of ancient and dangerous magical research that Akkarin had once abandoned. As Sonea navigates the guild's rigid hierarchy and mounting personal danger at home, Dannyl's diplomatic mission abroad begins to uncover threads that connect back to the very secret Sonea is struggling to keep.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Black Magician Trilogy): The original trilogy: a slum-dwelling street girl accidentally breaches the protective barrier of Kyralia's mage-controlled capital, Imardin, and is conscripted into the Magicians' Guild.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
