Synopsis

In the concluding volume of the Black Magician trilogy, Sonea, once a street girl and now an accepted student of magic within the Magicians' Guild of Imardin, is forced to reckon with something disturbing she has witnessed inside the private chambers of High Lord Akkarin. Akkarin offers her a cryptic warning of an ancient enemy that he claims threatens the Guild, and as he gradually reveals more of his hidden knowledge to her, Sonea faces an agonizing question: whether he is genuinely protecting the Guild from a real and existential danger, or manipulating her trust to further his own concealed schemes. At the same time, her old friend Cery, now connected to the criminal underworld of Thieves, becomes entangled with a mysterious stranger who offers his help with a covert operation of uncertain purpose, adding further uncertainty to a city already on edge.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Black Magician Trilogy): The original trilogy: a slum-dwelling street girl accidentally breaches the protective barrier of Kyralia's mage-controlled capital, Imardin, and is conscripted into the Magicians' Guild.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Black Magician Trilogy: position 3 of 3: previous The Novice (2002)
  • Internal chronology, within The Black Magician Trilogy and the Kyralia World: position 4 of 7: previous The Novice (2002) · next The Ambassador's Mission (2010)
