Synopsis

Opening the Traitor Spy trilogy, a sequel series to the Black Magician books, this novel finds the city of Imardin still unsettled in the aftermath of a past magical invasion, with corrupt guards, feuding noble Houses and an internally strained Magicians' Guild. Sonea's son Lorkin volunteers to accompany the Guild's Ambassador on a diplomatic mission to the dangerous land of Sachaka, over his mother's fears, leaving Sonea to face his absence and the constant risk that seeking him out herself could mean permanent exile. In Imardin's underworld, multiple criminal leaders known as Thieves have been murdered under mysterious circumstances, and an ambitious newcomer named Skellin moves to unite the fractured underworld by gathering information on the unknown killer, drawing Sonea's old friend Cery into the search.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Traitor Spy Trilogy): Direct sequel trilogy to The Black Magician Trilogy, set roughly 20 years later; the author's own reading-order page requires Black Magician to be read first.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Traitor Spy Trilogy: position 1 of 3: next The Rogue (2011)
  • Internal chronology, within The Black Magician Trilogy and the Kyralia World: position 5 of 7: previous The High Lord (2003) · next The Rogue (2011)
