Synopsis

The Masterharper of Pern recounts the life of Robinton from his birth and childhood as the son of the composer Petiron, who resents and undervalues him, through his musical education and his eventual election as Masterharper of Pern shortly before Lessa becomes Weyrwoman of Benden. Raised largely by his mother's warmth in place of his father's coldness, Robinton shows early gifts as a composer and teacher, rising quickly through the ranks of the Harper Hall despite the strain of his family relationships. As he matures into his role guiding Pern's Holds and Weyrs through music, diplomacy and information-gathering, he becomes increasingly alarmed by the ambitions of the ruthless Lord Fax, whose conquests threaten the stability of several Holds, and tries, without success, to warn the other Lord Holders of the danger Fax represents before the onset of the coming Pass.
