Synopsis
More than a decade after the wars between women and men that reshaped the Dales, Queen Jenna rules beside King Carum and has three children. The eldest, Scillia, was adopted in the way of the warrior priestesses of the Hames and is the intended heir; she travels the mother road to learn about her birth parents. Her brother Jemson is sent as an exchange to a land hostile to women and peasants, while the middle child, Corrie, keeps the family together. The king of Garun-over-the-Sea, at war with the Dales for a generation, plots to turn Jemson against his mother and sister so that Garun can seize the throne and invade. The dark sisters play a much smaller part than before.
