Overview

The Great Alta books are a fantasy sequence by the American writer Jane Yolen, published by Tor from 1988 to 1998 and first written for adults. The world is the Dales, where women live in separate communities called Hames and each can call forth a dark sister from a mirror. Sister Light, Sister Dark follows Jenna, a white-haired child of prophecy, and her shadow sister Skada. White Jenna continues their uprising as Jenna becomes queen. The One-Armed Queen, set over a decade later, centres on Jenna's adopted daughter Scillia and a threat from the kingdom of Garun. Two omnibus editions collect the books. The sequence is complete at three novels.
