Overview
In the world of Tencendor, an outcast son of a religious order discovers a magical heritage tying him to a long-suppressed people, the Icarii and Avar, and to a prophecy that will unite or destroy the land's three peoples. The Axis Trilogy, Battleaxe (1995), Enchanter (1996), and StarMan (1996), is Australian author Sara Douglass's debut trilogy, following Axis as he moves from a marginalized position within the human Acharite religious order to a central role in a coming conflict between humans and the magical peoples they have historically persecuted. Douglass draws on her academic background in medieval history for Tencendor's political and religious structures, layering a rigid, intolerant human theocracy against the older, magic-using cultures it has suppressed. The trilogy launched a long-running epic fantasy career built on the same setting, with Douglass returning to Tencendor across two further trilogies over the following decade.
