Sara Douglass was born Sara Warneke on July 2, 1957, in Penola, South Australia, and was a descendant of the psychic Robert James Lees. She attended Annesley College in Wayville, Adelaide, and while working as a registered nurse she completed a BA and later a PhD in early modern English history. Douglass became a lecturer in medieval history at La Trobe University in Bendigo, where she wrote her debut novel, BattleAxe, which launched her career as a major Australian fantasy author who later achieved international success. She maintained an active online community forum with her readers and wrote about restoring her historic home and gardens in Tasmania. Her major fantasy series include The Axis Trilogy, The Wayfarer Redemption, The Crucible, The Troy Game, and Darkglass Mountain, all built around meticulously researched historical and mythological influences woven into secondary-world settings. She won the Aurealis Award for Best Fantasy Novel twice, in 1996 for Enchanter and StarMan, and again in 2001 for The Wounded Hawk, with several other works reaching finalist status. Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008, Douglass saw the disease return in late 2010 and died on September 27, 2011, in Hobart, Tasmania, at age fifty-four.
