Synopsis

The world that the former monk Thomas Neville knows is on the point of ending: the battle of the Last Days is near, and with it the choice for which the angels have been shaping him. Thomas, who has learned that neither side in the war between heaven and hell is what he was taught, must confront questions of man's free will, the morality of angels and the natures of both God and Jesus, while England and France are ravaged again by war and plague, the Black Dog of Pestilence itself spreading the Death through London, and Margaret and the child she carries become the key to which way he will turn. The conclusion of the trilogy, an alternate history whose author's grasp of fourteenth-century detail and character, in Publishers Weekly's judgement, would delight readers of historical fantasy.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Crucible): Sara Douglass's historical fantasy of fourteenth-century England and France, an alternate history in which the Hundred Years' War, the Black Death and the Peasants' Revolt are moves in the war between the angels of Heaven and the demons who walk among men, seen through Thomas Neville, a Dominican friar and nobleman chosen by the archangel Michael.
