Synopsis

The Demon King wears the crown of England, and only someone strong enough to resist love can defeat him. As Edward III's reign ends in age and failure and the boy Richard II comes to the throne, England slides toward the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, and the struggle between the Church, the crown and the common people becomes, in the trilogy's alternate history, a front in the war between heaven and hell. Thomas Neville, now the archangel Michael's weapon, is caught between the ruthless purity the angels demand of him and the love he cannot stop feeling for Margaret, while the demons, whom he has been taught to hate as the source of every evil, show him a side of the war he was never told about. A second volume that reviewers praised for fusing the period's class struggle with a disturbingly ambiguous battle between good and evil.
