Synopsis

The Order War, the fourth novel in L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluce, follows Justen, a young Black Engineer trained in Nylan on the island of Recluce, who joins a relief force sent to aid Sarronnyn, a matriarchal nation in Candar and the last significant bastion of Order-aligned society on the mainland, when it comes under invasion by White Wizards from the rival city of Fairhaven wielding destructive chaos magic. As the war unfolds and the defense of Sarronnyn falters under the pressure of Fairhaven's chaos-fueled assault, Justen finds himself separated from his allies and pursued across the harsh desert lands of Candar, forced to rely on his own resourcefulness and growing understanding of Order and Chaos magic to survive.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
