Synopsis

The Death of Chaos, the fifth novel in L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluce, picks up with Lerris, protagonist of The Magic of Recluce, who has since built a quieter life for himself as a carpenter in the town of Kyphros, having settled down after his earlier dangergeld journey and training in order magic. That peace is broken when the distant Empire of Hamor sends invading forces across the ocean toward Candar, driven by ambitions of global conquest that threaten to upend the fragile balance between Order and Chaos across the known world and drag Lerris back into a fight he had hoped to leave behind.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Saga of Recluce: position 5 of 26: previous The Order War (1996) · next Fall of Angels (1997)
