Synopsis
The Quest for Tanelorn brings Dorian Hawkmoon's saga to its close as he joins forces with fellow incarnations of the Eternal Champion, including Elric, Corum, and Erekose, to face a pair of alien sorcerers who threaten the entire Multiverse. The champions must combine their powers, merging into a single formidable force, in order to overcome this cosmic threat. Hawkmoon's own goal throughout is to reach the legendary city of Tanelorn, a place of refuge outside the flow of ordinary time, where he hopes to recover the family and companions scattered by earlier upheavals. His journey culminates in confronting the cursed relics, the Black Jewel and the Runestaff, that have shaped and constrained his life, as he seeks to free himself from the forces that have used him as their instrument and finally return home.

Notes
- From the series record (The Chronicles of Castle Brass): Dorian Hawkmoon's own sequel trilogy, continuing directly after The History of the Runestaff tetralogy (SER, Core Canon, internal chronology 1-4). Registered Expanded Canon rather than folded into Core, per the explicit reasoning already on file at Hawkmoon's own admission: this trilogy deepens/crosses over more explicitly with other Eternal Champion incarnations than the tightly-scoped original tetralogy -- its climax (The Quest for Tanelorn) involves Erekose and the entity that inhabited Elric's Stormbringer (Elric Saga). Resolves a previously flagged standing lead.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series The Chronicles of Castle Brass: position 3 of 3: previous The Champion of Garathorm (1973)
- Internal chronology, within The Eternal Champion: position 25 of 30: previous The Bane of the Black Sword (1977) · next The Revenge of the Rose (1991)
