Michael Moorcock is an English author, born December 18, 1939, in Mitcham, Surrey (now Greater London). Active since 1957 as a novelist, journalist, scriptwriter, musician, and editor, he rose to particular prominence editing the British science fiction magazine New Worlds from 1964 to 1971 and again from 1976 to 1996, where he fostered the development of the 'New Wave' movement in British science fiction. Moorcock is best known for creating Elric of Melniboné, a subversive, morally ambiguous antihero who became one of the most influential figures in sword-and-sorcery fiction, as well as the interconnected 'multiverse' concept linking many of his works. Other major titles include the Jerry Cornelius quartet, Mother London, Gloriana, the Dancers at the End of Time sequence, and the Pyat Quartet, which confronts the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust. In 2008, The Times named him among 'The 50 greatest British writers since 1945.' His honors include the 2000 World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, the 2008 Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award, the 1977 Guardian Fiction Award for The Condition of Muzak, the 1979 World Fantasy Award and John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Gloriana, and the 1967 Nebula Award for the novella 'Behold the Man.' A self-described anarchist, Moorcock has infused political themes throughout his fiction and has split his time between Texas and Europe since the 1990s.
