Synopsis

With the Dark Empire of Granbretan having conquered much of Europe, the mystical Castle Brass remains hidden away in another dimension, one of the last places of refuge from the Empire's reach. Dorian Hawkmoon must locate Mygan, a traveler between dimensions, before Granbretan's forces can find him first, a quest that sends Hawkmoon and his ally Huillam D'Averc journeying through strange alternate realms while pursued relentlessly by the ruthless Baron Meliadus. Along the way they encounter Pahl Bewchard, a pirate captain who becomes an unlikely ally, as Hawkmoon is tasked with tracking down two legendary artifacts, the Sword of the Dawn and, ultimately, the fabled Runestaff itself, said to lie in a distant city, even as he wrestles with his own reluctance to accept the prophesied destiny closing in around him.

Notes

  • From the series record (The History of the Runestaff): Original title of book 2 was "Sorcerer's Amulet"; original title of book 4 was "The Secret of the Runestaff" -- both since retitled in reprints under the titles used here.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
