Synopsis
Following his victory at Hamadan, Dorian Hawkmoon journeys onward toward the city of Kamarang alongside his companion Oladahn, a beastman from the Bulgar Mountains, and the pair discover the ancient, mysteriously deserted city of Soryandum along the way. Their respite is short-lived: the Dark Empire's forces have tracked them down, and soldiers of Granbretan, led by the cunning renegade Huillam D'Averc, capture Oladahn in order to force Hawkmoon's surrender. When D'Averc's men plan to raze Soryandum to build a military base for their flying ornithopter craft, the city's ghostly, dimension-shifted inhabitants recruit Hawkmoon to retrieve a powerful crystalline device, the Mad God's Amulet, from a storeroom guarded by a deadly mechanical beast, a mission that could save both Soryandum and his imprisoned love, Yisselda, still held captive in Kamarang.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
