Synopsis

Carter Kane, of the 2010 first Kane Chronicles novel, has spent years traveling the world with his Egyptologist father, Julius, while his younger sister Sadie has grown up mostly separated from them, living in London with their grandparents. The siblings are reunited for a rare Christmas Eve visit to the British Museum, where Julius performs a secret ritual meant to summon the god Osiris. Instead, the spell goes disastrously wrong, unleashing the god Set along with Horus, Isis, and Nephthys, and Set seizes Julius and vanishes with him, vowing to use his power to remake the world in chaos. Taken in by their uncle Amos, Carter and Sadie learn their family descends from a line of pharaohs and magicians tied to the ancient House of Life, and that they have unwittingly become hosts to Horus and Isis.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
