Synopsis
In the broken empire of Numantia, dark magic is spreading and the ruling council cannot agree on anything. Damastes a Cimabue, a young and hotheaded cavalry officer, is sent on a dangerous border assignment and meets Laish Tenedos, a radical wizard with a seer's gift. The two survive an ambush that their enemies expected to kill them, and then outwit usurpers and necromancers who stand in the way. Word spreads that the pair are meant for something larger. Damastes tells the story from a prison cell, where he waits to learn whether he will be put to death, and claims that Tenedos brought about their ruin. The book follows their battles, political manoeuvring and growing trust as Tenedos sets out to restore the country with himself at its head.
