Synopsis

The Shadow Thieves, published in 2006, is the first book in the middle-grade Cronus Chronicles series inspired by Greek mythology, introducing ordinary American cousins Charlotte Mielswetzski and Zachary Miller, whose dull suburban lives are upended when Zee arrives from England trailing a strange, invisible malaise no doctor can diagnose. As more and more of their classmates begin falling under the same mysterious illness, Charlotte and Zee discover that the true cause lies far outside ordinary medicine, tracing back to the classical Underworld and the schemes of Philonecron, an ambitious, exiled figure with designs on Hades's throne. Venturing reluctantly into the realm of the dead to save their afflicted classmates, the two cousins encounter Hades, Persephone, and other larger-than-life figures from myth, armed with little more than wit, stubbornness, and each other.
