Synopsis

The Shamer's Daughter, published in 2000, opens in the kingdom of Dunark, where the King, his pregnant wife, and their young daughter have been murdered, and the King's elder son, Nicodemus, is found at the scene, holding a dagger and too drunk to account for himself. Because a confession is required to convict him, the Master of Law summons Melussina, a Shamer whose stare can draw out the shame hidden in anyone's mind, to examine him; when her findings prove ambiguous, the scheming Lord Drakan has her young daughter Dina, who has inherited the same unwanted gift, brought to Dunark Castle as well.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Shamer Chronicles: position 1 of 4: next The Shamer's Signet (2001)
