Lene Kaaberbøl was born March 24, 1960, in Copenhagen, Denmark, and grew up in Malling, a small town south of Aarhus in Jutland. Remarkably, she had her first book published at just fifteen years old, launching the long-running Tina series. She graduated from Aarhus Katedralskole and earned degrees in English and dramaturgy from Aarhus University. Beyond writing, Kaaberbøl has worked as a high school teacher, translator, and cleaner, reflecting a varied professional background before establishing herself as a full-time author. She is best known for the Shamer Chronicles, beginning with The Shamer's Daughter, a Danish fantasy series about a girl with the supernatural ability to force people to confront their guilt, and for the Wildwitch series (2011–2014). She has also co-authored internationally successful crime fiction with Agnete Friis, including The Boy in the Suitcase. Her fantasy and crime works have both been adapted for film, including two Shamer Chronicles films and a 2018 Wildwitch adaptation. Kaaberbøl won the Nordic Children's Book Prize in 2004 and shared the Harald Mogensen Prize with Agnete Friis in 2009 for their crime writing. She now lives on Sark in the Channel Islands, near France, continuing to write across both fantasy and crime genres for readers of multiple ages.
