Synopsis

Set some time after Dina's family is thrown into turmoil by her father Sezuan's return, this installment finds Dina and her brother Davin taking refuge in the Highland territory among the Kensie clan while agents of the warlord Drakan, who rules the harsh factory town of Dracana, infiltrate the Highlands to hunt them down. Davin, still coming into his own during a difficult coming-of-age, becomes a viewpoint character alongside Dina as the siblings are separated: Dina is captured by Drakan's cruel agent Valdracu and forced to misuse her Shamer ability against the townspeople of Dracana against her will, while Davin races across the Highlands to try to reach and free her. The novel follows the mounting threats of assassination, clan warfare, and Dina's forced corruption of her own gift as the two threads, Dina's captivity and Davin's rescue attempt, run in parallel.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
