Synopsis

The Thousand Names is set at a colonial garrison on the edge of a desert nation, where a sudden rebellion transforms a quiet outpost into an active war zone. Captain Marcus d'Ivoire, an officer with little taste for the difficulties ahead, must whip a small force of unprepared and demoralized soldiers into something capable of holding its ground. Among them is Winter Ihernglass, a soldier serving under a concealed identity to avoid the fate that would await her if discovered. Both come under the command of a newly arrived colonel, Janus bet Vhalnich, whose tactical brilliance and unreadable personal ambitions raise as many questions as they answer. As the rebellion escalates, the garrison's survival depends on Janus's leadership, even as his true motives, and the deeper currents of magic and history running beneath the conflict, remain only partly understood by the soldiers following him.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Shadow Campaigns): Core = the 5 main-sequence novels (2013-2017), a flintlock/gunpowder fantasy military series. Expanded = two e-novellas set in the same continuity, The Penitent Damned (2013) and The Shadow of Elysium (2015), not catalogued.
