Synopsis
In this second volume of the Memoirs of Lady Trent, Isabella, now a somewhat more seasoned but no less outspoken Lady Trent, embarks on a second dragon-studying expedition, this time to the Erigan savannah, a region standing in for a fantastical analog of Africa. Traveling with her research assistant Thomas Wilker and the young naturalist Natalie Oscett, Isabella becomes entangled in local politics and a web of social obligations she did not anticipate. A series of promises and commitments eventually pulls her and her companions into a perilous swamp known as the Green Hell, in search of something that could prove to have world-changing significance. Throughout, Isabella wrestles with the competing pulls of her expected roles as wife and mother against her driving ambitions as a serious scientist.
