Synopsis
After a military defeat, Numantia is run by a puppet government that answers to a foreign king. General Damastes is held prisoner and expects the worst, until he hears that the wizard Tenedos is alive and gathering an army to win Numantia back. Both sides want Damastes' skill as a commander, and he is forced to flee. All he wants is to go home, but the people who have used him before are not willing to let him go. He is pulled between a conquered homeland, a former master he no longer trusts and an enemy who needs his generalship, and must decide where his loyalties lie as the war for Numantia resumes.
