Synopsis

The White Order, the eighth novel in L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluce, follows Cerryl, a boy orphaned when White chaos mages killed his father, who discovers within himself an unexpected and dangerous talent for magic after he secretly teaches himself to read using his late father's books. As word of his growing abilities begins to spread and draws the notice of powerful and potentially hostile figures, Cerryl is sent away to the city of Fairhaven, stronghold of the White mages and center of Chaos-based magical power in Candar, in order to develop his talent under safer circumstances and work out what his future holds.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
