Synopsis
The Chaos Balance, the seventh novel in L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluce, follows on directly from the events of Fall of Angels, as the engineer and smith Nylan leaves the matriarchal "angels'" plateau sanctuary together with the healer Ayrlyn and his young son, hoping to build a quieter, more peaceful life away from the conflicts that shaped their earlier struggle for survival. Their hopes for peace are complicated by the fact that their distinctive skills in engineering, healing and order magic are valuable and hard to hide, and word of their abilities begins to draw unwanted attention. First published in 1998, The Chaos Balance belongs to the The Saga of Recluce series.

Notes
- From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).
